Prospectus for WINTERxWINTERII: “one thing needed…”
“I often painted fragments of things because it seemed to make my statement as well as or better than the whole could.” –Georgia O’Keeffe
“one thing needed,” is a quote from Georgia O’Keeffe in discussing her strategy for completing a work. I read this somewhere in “Georgia O’keeffe: Art and Letters” by the National Gallery of Art. My response to this idea is felt in my body first. Knowing when a piece of work is complete is up to each artist to find that point. The highlighting of fragments to speak to the larger whole. The contrast of the black and white woodcut to shock us to attention and show us the “one thing needed” according to X artist.
Winter will take the complete points of each artist accepted into WxWII and create a new larger whole from 80 “fragments.”
Winter wants you, the artist, to find the one thing needed in your work to hone the point you want your work to communicate.
Restrictions for work:
1. All work must be done on white (off white okay) heavy weight paper (240g or above).
2. Paper must be 22”x 30”
3. Artists may use any medium they desire, as long as it is worked directly onto the paper (or digitally printed). Things may be collaged onto the paper with other mediums directly on the paper.
4. Color palate is limited to monochromatic only. Please don’t push this restriction too far, I will be installing all 80 pieces hanging from the ceiling at an angle and in rows. I will need the unification tool of color to bring such diverse work together in the space.
WHO:
CURATOR and installer of WxWII: Julie Winter of Bend, OR. Winter is an artist and educator with an MFA in Visual Studies from Pacific Northwest College of Art. Her studio practice in printmaking and visual studies developed under the guidance of master printmaker and Atelier 6000/Bend Art Center founder, Patricia Clark. Winter teaches printmaking in woodcut, linocut, electro-etch, monotype, screenprint, and collagraph. She’s served in leadership roles as Interim Executive Director of Atelier 6000 and as the exhibition facilitator of M.C. Escher: 21 Prints- “Moments in Space and Time’, also at Atelier 6000. Winter’s practice as a visual artist is informed by her passions for art education and community building.
JUROR: The exhibition will be juried by Abney Wallace. Abney is a printmaker, drawer, sculptor, and installation artist living and working in Bend, OR. He’s been actively involved in the Bend art scene for 10+ years. He earned his MFA from Pacific Northwest College of Art and has shown in group and solo shows throughout the Northwest. When he’s not working in his cramped studio, he can be found reading maps, looking under rocks, and chasing the setting sun.
WHAT:
The first iteration of the hugely successful WxW took place in January 2019 at Bend Art Center. 20 artists were invited to create works on paper in response to the theme of dualisms and within specific parameters set by curator Julie Winter. The resulting exhibition was a blind collaboration between Winter and participating artists. WxW’s unique installation encouraged community interaction and in so doing, established a new shared landscape.
WxWII will represent the work of 80 chosen artists from an international call. Works will be selected based on successful response to theme and adherence to specified parameters. Selected works will hang from the ceiling at the Workhouse in Bend, OR. (The Workhouse is a shared studio, exhibition, education, and retail space tucked into one of the last remnants of original mill buildings left in town.)
WHEN:
Exhibition dates: January 3 – 31, 2020
Opening reception: January 3, 2020 6-10pm
Blind collaboration installation

WHY:
WxWII is the project of artist/curator Julie Winter. Winter is interested in the potentials that exist in soliciting an international spectrum of artists for the purpose of crossing cultural and sociopolitical boundaries in order to realize a new model of coexistence. What happens when the works of artists, unknown to each other, come together in a unifying expression of global community?
